A dessert is a customary sweet course typically eaten after a meal. The term dessert came from the French word “desservir”, which means “clear the table”. It usually consists of a sweet food that is sometimes strongly-flavored like cheese or chocolate.
Some culture does not eat a separate dessert after a meal. For instance, in Chinese cuisines, they have a mix of savory and sweet dishes throughout the entire meal but they sometimes prepare elaborate dessert concoctions for special events and occasions like the Chinese New Year.
Most of the time, the dessert is served separately either right after a meal or possible some time after in more casual settings. In America, the word “dessert” has a much broader meaning that refers to anything sweet after a meal. It can be a cake, muffin, brownie, pie or a milkshake, ice cream or sherbet.
There are a lot of recipes available for people who love eating sweets. These include the following:
- Cakes
- Chocolates
- Pies
- Puddings
- Baked Goods
- Cookies
- Custards
- Mousses
- Candies
A lot of recipes for dessert are elaborate and some are simplistic. However, they are both tasty finishes for every meal. The biggest concern with desserts is that it can be the unhealthiest portion of a meal. To increase the nutritional value of the dessert, a lot of people consider fruit-based dessert recipes as garnishes and main ingredients. Fruits are naturally sweet and cooking them eliminates the excess sugar.
If there is a need to add sweetness, you should be careful in what sugar substitute to use. Some sugar substitutes contain a harmful substance called Aspartame.
The presentation of a dessert is also considered very critical because it is the last thing people remember about a meal. A dessert should be served in smaller plates because smaller plates make the portions look generous. You can also decorate the dessert with light sauces, a branch of mint, cookie or anything similar to it. It should also be neat meaning that the portions should be uniformed and are symmetrical in shapes. Also, contrasting colors can provide stunning accents to its presentation. For example, you can add white chocolate or raspberry garnishes to a slice of cake. Another perfect example for a well-presented dessert is the use of chocolate shavings, cookie crumbs, sprinkles, whipped cream and nuts for the toppings.
A dessert is a perfect way to end a meal. In preparing desserts, good taste and creativity are all that you need.
